My favorite things in 2018, pt. 4 - Briogeo Rosarco Milk ✨⁣ ⁣ Briogeo Rosarco Milk is a lightweight leave-in conditioning spray, that contains a blend of rosehip, argan and coconut oils and vitamin E to combat dryness, restore shine, heat protect and strengthen hair. ⁣ ⁣ My hair is that annoying, neither straight nor curly type, that gets frizzy in the humidity. I've tried a bunch of products, but since none of them worked, I've pretty much given up on trying new stuff. I got a sample of Rosarco Milk and thought it would be another useless hair product, but it turned out to be a game changer!⁣ ⁣ I apply Rosarco Milk on damp hair, before blow drying. It smoothes and detangles my hair and makes it so soft. It doesn't make it greasy at all and I use it on dry hair for extra shine. The smell is amazing and lasts quite a long time. ⁣ ⁣ The effect it gives me is the same as I would get with silicone serums, very sleek, smooth and shiny. This product made me start paying more attention to my hair and made it look better than ever, even when it's raining!⁣ ⁣ I'll definitely try more Briogeo products! What should I try next? Do you have any recommendations?⁣

Morning 🌞 or night shower 💫? I’m definitely all for night showers but do occasionally shower in the morning if I’m feeling extra sluggish that day. Speaking of showers- I’m obsessed with these new goodies that @briogeo sent over! All three of these products together leave me with the softest and shiniest hair. _ ✨ The “don’t despair, repair” super moisture shampoo does a stellar job at cleansing my hair while retaining the moisture and leaving my scalp balanced. _ ✨ I didn’t have a deep conditioner in my arsenal until the “don’t despair, repair” deep conditioning mask came into my life 😱 safe to say I’m hooked on this mask and use it a little more than I probably should. I focus the mask on my ends and let it sit in my hair while I do other showerly tasks. I then rinse with cool water and WOW my hair is left soooo soft. I have long hair that gets knotted very easily so this mask is seriously my savior for not ripping out all my hair every time I brush it. 😂 _ ✨ Last but not least the “Blossom & Bloom” ginseng + biotin volumizing spray is the perf third step to my hair routine. I mist this on damp hair before blow drying and I love how full it makes my bangs look. If you have bangs you know how easy it is to look like you only have like 3 bang strands. Plus I’m obsessed with the scent of this spray. It’s light & fruity without being overpowering or giving me a headache. _ ✨ Have you tried any @briogeo products? Gradually moving over the photos from my personal account. This was from last #texturetuesday but you can see how sad that little blob of white foam on the photo is. 😂 . Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal and Coconut Oil micro-exfoliating shampoo — this works so well on my fine hair! It’s gentle enough to use everyday and gunk doesn’t get stuck in your hair. Plus the scent is so invigorating! Bought this because @gothamista made me do it. . Ouai Air Dry Foam — I almost returned this because it’s supposed to be for curly/wavy hair and mine is stick straight, but I decided to give it a try, and not was I impressed with the results! I actually had waves the next morning! And they lasted all day!

It’s 1230 A.M and I took a break from studying to post my absolute favourite hair mask 🤩 It’s the Brigeo Don’t Despair, Repair deep conditioning mask!! . . . . I have wavy hair, slightly on the thinner side! My scalp gets oily really quickly but my ends are SUPER dry so this mask is perfect for my dry ends 😍😍 I use this once a week and leave it on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water 🚿 This Mask is honestly magic 😍 its so nourishing and extremely hydrating!! A MUST HAVE for sure! . . . . As for the minis, I really enjoyed the leave in conditioner but the blow dry perfection and heat protectant was my favourite😍😍 I use it right after showering and before blow drying my hair! It also smells amazing 😍 I cannot wait to purchase the full size 💫 There was also the scalp exfoliator which is not part of this picture because I actually finished the sample size! I really liked that product as well. I left like it removed any build up on my scalp 🤩 . . . . . . . . . #hairgoal #haircare #skincare #loveforskin #loveforhair #skincareaddict #haircareaddic #hairtexture #briogeo #deepconditioningmask #masking #musthave #deepconditioning #conditioner #hairfashion #pampersession #pamperyourself #ownyourhair #ownyourskin #beyou #youdefineyou #loveyourself

Ran into #sephora last week to return something and grabbed this cute little set from @briogeo ✨The Mystical Minis set contains the Don’t Despair Repair Hair Mask, that I really enjoy and the Scalp Revival Charcoal+Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo. Let me tell you...this Exfoliating Shampoo is AMAZING!.. Is it made with magical unicorn tears and puppy kisses?..probably. My scalp has been so dry and itchy and just irritated. I mentioned last week that my new medication/chemo makes my skin and scalp break out horribly. Super uncomfortable and bothers me a lot. Nothing has helped. I figured I’d try this, thinking it couldn’t hurt. I was so surprised how much it helped! It was cooling and refreshing on my scalp, and easy to rinse out. (A problem I’ve had with similar products) It also didn’t dry out my hair at all. My hair was soft and manageable and my scalp felt so much better and hasn’t bothered me since. So happy I grabbed this on a whim! Full size will be mine ASAP! I haven’t been so surprisingly happy with a hair product in so long. ✨Have you tried this magic shampoo yet? You Can Clean Your Hair Without Shampoo? Wait, What?

on January 17, 2019

We're not talkin' dry shampoo ladies. On today's agenda, we're here to inform you about the magic of co-wash. Whether you’re already an avid co-washer, or just starting out, take notes!

What is a Co-Wash?

Co-washing stands for conditioner-only washing, also known as cleaning your hair with conditioner rather than shampoo.

Why Co-Washing?

Co-washing gently, yet effectively, rids the hair of dirt and buildup while nourishing and conditioning the hair. It’s a high slip cleanser that helps with detangling and leaves the hair feeling hydrated, soft, and silky!

Who should Co-Wash?

Raise your hand if you have color-treated, coarse, unruly, thick or dry hair… If your hand is raised, your hair would benefit tremendously from a co-wash! It’s an ultra-hydrating conditioner-wash, that gently cleanses without ridding the hair of its essential, natural oils. Using a co-wash like our Avocado and Quinoa Co-Wash can actually extend the life of color-treated hair, because “Co-washing doesn’t strip strands of pigment the way traditional cleansing can.” Our Co-Wash also contains a lot of shea butter, one of the best natural solutions to gently detangle hair and enhance softness, texture and feel.

How do you Co-Wash?

One of the most common misconceptions about co-washing is that it should be used as a complete replacement to your normal shampoo and conditioner routine… And that’s simply not right! Your scalp collects build-up over time from using products like hairspray, cream, gel, and of course, dry shampoo. No matter how clean your hair feels after co-washing, the leftover residue from your favorite hair products still lingers on your scalp and that can clog the hair follicle. This can lead to an itchy scalp, irritation, and hair loss (That's going to be a no from us). To prevent this from happening, we recommend using a clarifying shampoo like our Be Gentle, Be Kind Superfoods Shampoo in between co-washing. This will give your hair and scalp a nice deep clean, without stripping it of the oils it needs.

Some people are more visual learners, so to sum up this co-washing 411, we’re handing it off to YouTube star and beauty guru Shadh to wrap things up!

Get Ready With Violette_fr & Briogeo: Your Go-To Natural Haircare Routine

on January 17, 2019

#BriogeoBabe, Violette, showing us how a natural haircare routine is done!

Products Used:

Scalp Revival charcoal + tea tree scalp treatment

This notable treatment utilizes Binchotan charcoal to remove impurities from the scalp and hair follicle to get rid of buildup and provide the foundation for optimal scalp health. A soothing blend of peppermint and spearmint oils reduces scalp itchiness and tea tree oil has anti-septic and healing properties that reduce scalp irritation and inflammation. Witch Hazel water helps to normalize oil production to prevent an oily scalp while sodium hyaluronate and aloe keep the scalp balanced and hydrated. Super-vitamin, Biotin, provides essential nutrients to the hair follicle to support healthy hair growth.

How to use: Part the hair into sections, apply 1-2 drops to each partition and massage into the scalp. Do not rinse out. The treatment should be applied after washing and before styling. It can also be applied before bedtime as a pre-shampoo scalp treatment.

Don't Despair, Repair! deep conditioning mask

This miracle mask works in minutes to restore essential hydration and natural vibrancy to dry, brittle, over-processed, and otherwise lackluster hair. Formulated with our unique NOVA Complex, this mask delivers an optimal blend of transformative nutrients from B-vitamins, rosehip and argan oils, algae, and biotin to replenish damaged hair to a shiny, healthy-looking, and lustrous state.

How to use: After shampooing, massage into the hair, ensuring the conditioner is evenly applied. Leave in for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. For even deeper conditioning, cover the hair in a plastic cap to retain moisture while sitting under the dryer for 30 minutes, then rinse.

Scalp Revival charcoal + coconut oil micro-exfoliating shampoo

This uniquely texturized shampoo infuses Binchotan charcoal to draw impurities from the scalp and hair follicle to provide the foundation for optimal scalp health. The plant-derived micro-exfoliators remove dead skin cells and product build-up from the scalp to support a clean, balanced, and healthy scalp; while a cooling blend of peppermint and spearmint oils reduces scalp itchiness. Tea tree oil has antiseptic and healing properties that reduce scalp irritation and inflammation.

How to use: Apply to wet hair and vigorously massage into the scalp and through to the ends. Rinse and repeat, as necessary. Apply your favorite Briogeo conditioner or treatment post-shampoo.

Farewell Frizz rosehip, argan & coconut oil blend

This nutrient-rich blend of rosehip, argan, and coconut oils effectively restores silky sheen to lackluster locks, and it seals split ends for a sleek, healthy finish. Formulated with coconut oil, it smooths the hair cuticle to lock in moisture and help reduce environmental impurities. Argan oil provides extensive conditioning to restore luster and diminish frizz, while antioxidant-rich rosehip oil shields strands from UV and free-radical damage.

How to use: Apply a few drops to your palms, use more or less depending on hair length and thickness, and rub hands together so the treatment is evenly distributed. Gently rub palms through hair, focusing on the mid-length to ends. Treatment can be applied to damp hair before air or blow drying or it can be applied to dry hair as needed.

Scalp Revival stimulating therapy massager

The massager can be used alone on a dry scalp or paired with your favorite Briogeo shampoo, oil, or treatment for a massage therapy experience in or out of the shower.

How to use: Apply shampoo, massage oil, or treatment as usual and distribute throughout the scalp and hair. While holding the massager in your palm, gently press the rubber tips to the scalp with medium pressure and massage. Repeat on all areas of the scalp. It can be used on wet or dry hair, with or without product. Avoid large circular motions to prevent tangling.

"This Shampoo-Conditioner Combo Got Rid Of My Flakes And Soothed My Dry, Itchy Scalp - See The Before & After Photos"

on January 17, 2019

Our girl, Jeanine, suffered from a dry, flaky scalp for years... until she met Briogeo. Check out her transformation story using our Scalp Revival goodies! :

Hi, I’m Jeanine. I’ve worked at SheFinds for almost ten years now and during that time I’ve shared lots about myself with our readers. For the last ten years, though, there’s one beauty secret I’ve been keeping that I just didn’t have the courage to talk about… until now, that is.

Yes, I have a dry, flaky scalp. Like, really bad flakes. It all started about ten years ago when I gave birth to my daughter. I was prepared for my body to change and the thick hair I developed during pregnancy to thin out, but I never expected to develop such serious flakiness. If you’re a mom, then the only way I can explain it is that it looked and felt like I had cradle cap. My scalp was so flaky and some days, the itch was borderline unbearable.

I tried using the regular anti-itch shampoos that everyone always recommends, but they didn’t do anything. I decided to talk to my doctor about it and she didn’t seem super concerned. She was essentially like, “I can give you medicine to try to help combat it or you can just wash your hair more often to keep the flakes at bay.” I’m not a huge medicine person, so I made the decision to stop straightening my hair and wear it “natural,” just so I could wash it every day or two and keep the itch under control.

There are lots of stories on the Internet about the perks of wearing your hair “natural,” but I feel like no one ever is really, truly honest about just how much time, effort and money it requires to maintain. Washing your hair multiple times a week means lots of money on products that run out faster than ever before. And I could never just wake up and go; I always had to build in at least 45 minutes to do something with my hair. At the end of this summer, I decided I was over the commitment to wearing my hair natural. I wanted my mornings to be easier, so I made the decision to start straightening my hair again, flakes be darned.

As luck would have it, right around the time I decided to start straightening my hair again, I was given the opportunity to try Briogeo’s charcoal + coconut oil micro-exfoliating shampoo (which won an Allure Best of Beauty award!) and charcoal + peppermint oil cooling jelly conditioner:

Briogeo charcoal + coconut oil micro-exfoliating shampoo ($42)

Briogeo charcoal + peppermint oil cooling jelly conditioner ($36)

I’d seen ads for their products on social media, but never really gave them a second thought until I saw a video highlighting how it helped one woman get her dry, flaky scalp under control. The products are made with coconut, peppermint and tea tree oils, which are proven to moisturize and reduce flakiness. There’s also charcoal which helps absorb product buildup and detoxify the scalp. I jumped at the opportunity to be the guinea pig that tested these products!

When my two week straightening appointment rolled around, I showed up to my hairstylist with the charcoal + coconut oil micro-exfoliating shampoo and charcoal + peppermint oil cooling jelly conditioner in tow and asked if she could use them instead of her normal products. She agreed and was actually pretty excited to try something new.

Okay, brace yourself. Here’s what my hair looked like when I sat down in my stylist’s chair:

Eww, right?! And truth be told, this isn’t even that bad compared to what I sometimes see in my hair. My stylist did two washes with the shampoo and then applied the conditioner and let it sit for about five minutes before rinsing.

After the first shampoo, I started to get really excited. First of all, the minty smell was so strong, I just knew it had to be doing something on my scalp. What’s more, though, is that I could feel my scalp tingling in a way that it never had before. Good things were happening!

After the shampoo and conditioner were completely rinsed from my hair, my stylist put me under the hair dryer and the tingling continued. Next, she blow dried and flat ironed my hair as usual and I left praying that the dreaded itchy sensation wouldn’t return in a day or two.

I actually waited five whole days to take my “after” picture. With regular shampoo and conditioner, the flakes and the itch would be back with three days without fail, but here’s what my scalp looked like five days after using Briogeo’s charcoal + coconut oil micro-exfoliating shampoo and charcoal + peppermint oil cooling jelly conditioner:

Flake free, baby! And I’d like to add that this after pic was taken using a fancy DSLR camera with studio quality lights! Not a flake in sight! I couldn’t be happier.

While I was super happy to see how Briogeo’s charcoal + coconut oil micro-exfoliating shampoo and charcoal + peppermint oil cooling jelly conditioner would help my scalp, I was secretly a bit worried that it wouldn’t actually agree with my hair. Turns out, it didn’t just work wonders on my scalp; my hair is softer and has stayed straighter longer than when my stylist was using her own stuff. Win win all around!

I never thought I’d be one of those obsessive people that brings their own products to the salon, but until my stylist starts carrying Briogeo’s products, I’ll be bringing them with me every two weeks for my straightening appointments. I honestly never thought I’d be able to get my dry, flaky, itchy scalp under control and I can’t tell you how a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I’m no longer self-conscious about wearing my hair parted and the itch is completely and totally gone.

If you have an itchy or flaky scalp, don’t think twice about treating yourself to these products. They’re beyond amazing and worth every single penny. I’ll be buying them on the reg without hesitation.

How To: Define Your Hair Goals

on January 16, 2019

Winter is the season of slowing down, hibernation, and reflection. We're all for sipping on a seasonally appropriate matcha latte and becoming one with our couches, but it's also the season to be in tune with nature's lull and plan for the upcoming months. As the days are short and nights long, this is a time of dream-making and getting goals into gear. Hair goals are no exception! Your hair is the crown you never take off, so why not spend a little time being intentional about how to take care of it this upcoming year? We've compiled this guide to help you define your own unique hair goals.

1. Hair Health

How is the health of your hair doing? If it feels dry, frizzy, dull, damaged, or all of the above -- consider scheduling in a deep conditioning mask treatment 1-4x a month. Our Don't Despair, Repair! colletion  is clinically proven to help improve the appearance of hair health using ingredients like algae extract, panthenol, and biotin to help restore, repair, and protect hair from damage.

2. Hair Length

Short, medium, or long? The possibilities of length seem to always be the question to ponder. No matter what length you decide to go, it's always a good idea to give it a boost of vitamins and nutrients. Our [LINK PRODUCT] Be Gentle, Be Kind Superfoods Shampoo and Conditioner give your hair a healthy dose of vitamins, necessary for good hair health. Just keep in mind that if you are short and want to grow out your hair, be sure to take care of your scalp along with keeping hair moisturized between regular trimmings!

3. Hair Style

Whether you are thinking about getting that chic, messy LOB, going natural, or been back and forth about the question of getting bangs, style is one of the key factors in defining hair goals. Take some time to consider all your options and gather some references of hairstyles you really like. Don't be afraid to add some styles that feel more daring to you, the point is to be inspired!

4. Maintenance

Are you a "get up at 6AM to work out" type or a "I'd rather snooze 3 times" kind of person? Different hairstyles require different levels of maintenance and care. Check in with your current routine to see how much time and energy you put into your hair every day and compare that with how much you expect your dream hairstyle to take. Another thing to keep in mind is how often you'll need to get your haircut to maintain the style. Shorter, pixie cuts require touch-ups every 4-6 weeks while longer styles only need trims about 6-12 weeks.

5 Haircare Resolutions You Should Have For 2019

on January 16, 2019

Photo via @laurengores

New year’s resolutions can seem so exciting when you’re creating them — from getting fit and reading more to learning a new language or getting a new job, it always seems like the world is your oyster come January 1 each year. However, some resolutions can be surprisingly hard to achieve. Most take serious motivation, unwavering commitment, and dedicated time. No wonder so many people throw in the towel by February and just make do with the status quo.

But if you’re starting the new year off with specific #hairgoals in mind — whether it’s to add length, increase shine and health, or say goodbye to that annoyingly itchy scalp — then you’re in luck! It’s the perfect time to make a fresh pledge to loving your locks and it’s never been easier to stick to your promise. Are you ready to make 2019 the year of haircare resolutions that actually work?

Simply vow to follow these five tips (no cheating!) and you’ll be well on your way to having the hair you’ve always wanted:

1. Avoid chemicals at all costs.

So many haircare products are filled with dangerous ingredients, such as parabens, harsh sulfates, silicones, phthalates, and artificial dyes. These compounds can irritate your scalp, clog hair follicles, disrupt hormones, irritate skin, contribute to hair loss, and are even linked to cancer. Your hair and skin deserve better treatment than that — they deserve to be bathed in clean ingredients that improve your health instead of harming it. That’s why Briogeo's proprietary "NOVA Complex" — which stands for Natural Oils, Vitamins and Antioxidants — is at the core of every single product formula. This helps establish a foundation for long-term healthy, nourished, and beautiful hair. As part of your 2019 haircare resolutions, say goodbye to any products in your shower or hiding in your bathroom drawers that don’t meet these strict standards and you’ll already be one step closer to luscious locks.

2. Start with your scalp.

Great hair health begins with great scalp health. If you’ve been using chemical-filled products up until now, you likely have product build-up caking your scalp. So let’s start the new year with a clean slate! Our Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo infuses Binchotan charcoal to draw impurities from the scalp and hair follicle to provide the foundation for optimal scalp health. Its vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators remove dead skin cells and product build-up, while its cooling blend of peppermint and spearmint oils reduces scalp itchiness. We included tea tree oil for its healing properties (which reduce scalp irritation and inflammation), plus the coconut oil for superior moisturization. Be sure to follow-up with matching conditioner — and if you’re looking to take things to the next level, don’t miss our stimulating therapy massager.

3. Loosen up.

Yes, those tight ponytails, braids and top knots are oh-so-chic, but they are also putting extra strain on your mane. And the more pulling and harsh accessories you subject your hair to, the more likely your hair is to be damaged — it could even contribute to hair loss. Plus, if you’re prone to headaches, this could also be an underlying factor. Use these sleek styles as a last resort on a truly bad hair day, or just for a couple hours on a hot date or for an IG-worthy social event. Just remember to always let your hair down before you climb into bed so that it can rest while you do.

4. Lay off the heat.

Don’t worry your pretty little head of hair – we aren’t talking about your beloved styling tools (although these don’t do your hair’s health any favors). As part of your haircare resolutions, make sure to apply Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Crème first before applying any heat. In addition, can we also agree to keep things a bit cooler in the shower? Hot water actually revs up your sebaceous glands, which speeds up the production of sebum — and that makes your hair greasy faster (which leads to excessive washing, which is also bad for your hair)! See how it all comes full circle? But don’t worry, you don’t have to stand in the shower shivering. Just choose a warm temperature rather than a scalding hot one for the majority of your shower and then finish with a cold rinse over your hair.

5. Mask and You Shall Receive

Scheduling deep conditioning hair masks in your routine 2-4 times a month is essential to achieving hair goals. Just remember, as with any dry hair treatment, always check labels and be sure your conditioning hair mask is free from silicone, phthalates and other nasty synthetic additives. We recommend using our award-winning Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask which is formulated with our unique NOVA Complex. This mask quenches hair with an optimal blend of B-vitamins, rosehip and argan oils, algae, and biotin to replenish damaged hair to its shiny, lustrous glory.

Now you have to admit: These certainly sound more manageable than swearing off pizza or learning Mandarin, right? After a few months of making a concerted effort to follow these haircare resolutions, we know you’ll fall in love with the results and keep up your new habits for a lifetime!

Tea Tree Oil Benefits For Your Scalp & Skin

on January 15, 2019

Tea Tree Oil Clinically Proven To Benefit Scalp and Skin

If you only grab for your bottle of tea tree oil when you have a blemish, then it’s time to rethink this multi-use “medicine-cabinet-in-a-bottle” product ASAP. Tea tree oil can be used to treat a whole host of issues, including athlete’s foot and other fungal infections, sinusitis, bacterial and viral infections and a whole lot more. And yes, it is an effective blemish treatment too — but did you know it can also work wonders for your scalp and hair, too? Well, read on and prepare to be amazed.

Tea tree oil comes from the Australian-native melaleuca alternifolia plant from which the illustrious Captain James Cook brewed a tea back in the 1770s. Cook dubbed this shrub-like tree the “tea tree,” which, as you can probably guess, is how the plant’s oil came to be known as tea tree oil. As it turns out, this natural antimicrobial was already being used by the Australian Aboriginal indigenous population to treat all kinds of issues — a fact that Cook soon discovered. Tea tree oil has had a long and storied past, which has led to many extensive studies of its natural antifungal, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties.

When It Comes to Tea Tree Oil, Quality is Queen

You probably already know that you can find tea tree oil in most health food stores, but many of these inexpensive products are extracted from traditionally grown (non-organic) tea tree plantations where the use of pesticides and other chemicals is widespread. These store-bought tea tree oils may even be sourced from genetically modified species of the tea tree and are often mixed with other oils and compounds. Unfortunately, these types of inferior, genetically altered and adulterated strains do not offer the same healing benefits as pure, organic tea tree oil. So, when you’re buying tea tree oil, it’s important to find the most potent and pure, highest-quality extract you can find.

Another important purchasing consideration is the method by which the tea tree oil is extracted. The highest quality tea tree oils are extracted via a steam distillation process: tea tree leaves are harvested, chopped and then placed in sealed stainless steel stills. Once inside, the leaves are steamed for many hours. As the oil mixes with the steam, it runs through a condenser and then into a special chamber that separates the oil from the water. This steam distillation process, while time-consuming, is the best way to extract tea tree oil of the highest quality.

Organic Tea Tree Oil Works from Skin to Scalp

Having a bottle of pure, organic, steam-distilled tea tree oil on hand means you have access to an array of healing benefits for both the skin and scalp. One small bottle is a virtual powerhouse of soothing, healing oil, but it’s always a good idea to do a patch test before putting any essential oil on your face, scalp or large areas of skin. And, as with all other essential oils, we recommend you always dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil before use.

Here are steps for conducting a tea tree oil patch test:

  • First, dilute the oil in a small, clean vessel. We recommend a 2% dilution which is roughly 12 drops of tea tree oil to 1 ounce (30ml) of an organic carrier oil, such as coconut oil.
  • Use a sterile cotton swab to apply a small amount to the inside of the arm.
  • Leave the oil on for 48 hours; covering with a clean bandage to keep it in place.
  • If you notice any burning, redness or irritation over the course of the 48 hours, wash the area with mild soap and water.
  • If you do not experience any kind of allergic reaction, you are safe to use diluted tea tree oil on the skin and scalp.
  • Note: Never ingest this oil internally.

Tea Tree Oil For Skin Blemishes and Inflammation

Spots, blemishes, zits, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, pimples — whatever your skin issue, we all have the same goal: to eradicate them! Reducing skin blemishes is one of the most well-documented tea tree oil uses. One clinical trial of 60 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris concluded that topical 5% tea tree oil is an effective treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Another study of 124 acne sufferers showed that 5% tea-tree oil had a significant effect in ameliorating patients' blemishes by reducing the number of inflamed and non-inflamed lesions. Tea tree oil is the real deal.

Before we talk further about using tea tree oil for skin blemishes, let’s talk about what a blemish is: nothing more than a clogged, infected sebaceous (aka oil) gland. And, with 2,500 to 6,000 of them occupying each square inch of your face, the chance of a blemish popping up is pretty high. It stands to reason that unblocking and disinfecting the oil glands of your face can help treat existing blemishes and may even reduce the likelihood of future breakouts.

The truth is, when you use tea tree oil for skin, blemishes don’t stand a chance. That’s because one of the ways in which tea tree oil benefits the skin and reduces blemishes and redness is by getting past the skin’s outer layer where it is able to unblock clogged sebaceous glands. Dirt, oil and pus are eradicated by this essential oil’s potent antimicrobial, antiseptic and antibacterial properties. All you need to do is apply a small amount of diluted tea tree oil for blemishes to give up and run for the hills. Use a sterile cotton swab to apply it wherever pimples most often appear (like your chin) and let it dry out those spots while cleaning your other pores as well.

Tea Tree Oil Can Help Promote Luxurious Locks and Soothe Itchy Scalps

Okay, so you’re surely convinced that tea tree oil for skin blemishes is legit. But now we’re going to blow your mind because tea tree oil benefits hair fullness as well. You read that right, tea tree oil’s ability to unclog and disinfect pores doesn’t end with your face. When applied to the scalp, this oil actually promotes hair fullness by helping to unclog hair follicles and nourish roots which helps the hair to reach its full thickness potential.

Okay so maybe longer, flowing locks are not the only scalp concern on your radar. Perhaps you suffer with an embarrassing scalp itch that leads to flaking — directly onto the shoulders of that sophisticated black blazer you’re wearing (gulp!). Here’s the news you’ve been waiting for: Tea tree oil uses include soothing scalp irritation and mitigating scalp flaking. Tea tree oil deeply moisturizes the hair and scalp, greatly reducing dryness, flakiness and itchiness. In fact, a study conducted by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that a 5 percent tea tree oil mixture appears to be effective and well tolerated in the treatment of dandruff. So you’re going to want to get this little miracle oil in your hands (and on your head), and fast.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Hair and Scalp

So it’s no secret that tea tree oil benefits both hair and scalp… but what is the best way to apply this essential oil for maximum effect? The first method is to dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil (as outlined earlier in this article) and massage into your scalp. You may rinse after 10-15 minutes, or, for a deeper treatment, leave on overnight and wash in the morning.

The second (and our preferred) method is to create your own tea tree oil shampoo. Simply pour a generous dollop of your favorite shampoo into your hand, add 2-3 drops of pure, organic tea tree oil, then shampoo and rinse hair as usual. If you have significant scalp itching and flaking, we recommend doing a tea tree oil application two to three times per week. Once your scalp has calmed down, you can reduce to once a week.

3 Castor Oil Uses and Benefits for Hair, Skin and Eyebrows

3 Ways Castor Oil Will Jumpstart Your Beauty Regimen

When you think about the most effective skin and hair moisturizers, castor oil might not be the first thing that comes to mind — but it should. This oil does some very heavy lifting in the world of hair, nails and all things beauty. And, although it may be new to you, castor oil is by no means new on the beauty scene. In fact, not only were castor oil beans found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 4000 BC, but Cleopatra was also known to rely on this sumptuous oil as one of her favorite beauty essentials. And if it was good enough for Cleopatra, we’re sure you’ll love it too!

You may have heard someone mention castor oil before, but it was probably referenced simply as an old-fashioned medicinal remedy (and not one that was remembered fondly). Calling castor oil a mere health remedy doesn’t come close to doing this powerhouse oil justice. The truth is, cold pressed castor oil is a nutrient-dense, multi-purpose beauty oil that can be used to improve the health of hair, skin and nails. Castor oil benefits include healing, moisturizing and promoting hair fullness — couldn’t we all use a little more of all that?

Why Cold Pressed Castor Oil is Better

Castor oil is obtained by extracting oil from the seeds of the castor bean tree. But, while this highly humectant oil can be a fantastic addition to your beauty regimen, not all castor oils are created equal. If you want the highest level of nutrients and benefits, it’s important to choose a pure, organic castor oil that was obtained through a cold press extraction process.

Some castor oil manufacturers use chemicals to extract the oil from the seeds of traditionally grown (non-organic) castor trees. While this method is faster and less expensive than making cold pressed castor oil, it seriously degrades the quality of the oil, can introduce a variety of impurities, and greatly lowers the oil’s overall quality. Sometimes these manufacturers will even blend in other oils or additives — a method that further decreases the oil’s many nutrients and benefits and can also lead to skin irritation when applied. The end result of this chemical extraction process is a less expensive, but also far less effective product.

Organic, cold pressed castor oil, on the other hand, is a nutrient-dense, pure and deeply moisturizing oil that offers a wealth of beauty benefits. Cold pressing is a heat-and chemical-free process in which simple pressure is applied to crush castor oil seeds. This pressure alone releases a robust oil with all of its essential fatty acids, minerals and nutrients intact. The end result? The highest quality organic castor oil — packed with vitamin E, omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, and a host of other minerals and nutrients to deeply hydrate hair, skin and nails.

How to Add Castor Oil to Your Daily Routine

While there are numerous castor oil uses, here are our favorite ways to use it:

Use #1: Castor Oil is a Fabulous Moisturizer for Skin, Hair and Nails

Castor oil is a highly effective moisturizer that soothes and smooths flaky, dehydrated skin. It is rich in vitamin E and a monounsaturated fat called ricinoleic acid — a fat that acts as a humectant; retaining moisture by preventing water loss through the skin. It does this by drawing in moisture from the air and encapsulating it near the skin. So, you use castor oil for skin on your hands, elbows and any other area that needs a moisture boost.

If your hair tends to be dry and prone to breakage and split ends, castor oil can help. When using castor oil for hair, consistency is key. Apply it regularly and you will keep the hair shaft moisturized, which can increase hair’s flexibility and reduce hair breakage. You can also apply it to the scalp to ease dryness and itch and mitigate the flaking associated with dandruff.

Do you have brittle nails that break or peel easily? Then castor oil should become your go-to nail treatment. Its rich, thick texture and generous dose of vitamin E make it a great option for moisturizing not only the cuticle area, but also the nail bed itself. And thanks to castor oil’s ability to increase circulation and blood flow, you may even see improvements in nail growth with regular application. Hello, gorgeous nails!

Use #2: Castor Oil Can Help Promote Hair Fullness

Castor oil is an excellent hair moisturizer, but did you know it can also encourage and promote hair fullness? Studies show that the oil’s main component, ricinoleic acid, stimulates the production of the lipid Prostaglandin (PGE2). This lipid is known for its ability to enrich hair follicles and encourage hair regeneration. And who doesn’t want fuller, healthier hair? To use castor oil for hair, and maximize the fortifying benefit, we recommend regularly applying this oil along the hairline to promote healthy hair fullness.

Use #3: Castor Oil Can Help You More Defined Eyebrows and Eyelashes

As if its moisturizing and hair fullness properties weren’t enough, castor oil is also known to contribute to more defined eyebrows and eyelashes with proper application and continued use. Here’s how we recommend using castor oil for eyebrows:

First, as with any skin care product, be sure to do a patch test before applying castor oil to eyebrows or the face. Allergic reactions are very rare, but better safe than sorry. To test, simply use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of organic, cold pressed castor oil to the underside of your arm. Then wait at least 24 hours to see if you notice any redness, irritation or other allergic reaction. If you don’t have any reaction to the patch test, you can safely use castor oil for eyebrows. Watch this video demonstrating how to apply castor oil to eyebrows or follow our steps below (after a successful patch test is completed).

  • Start with clean, dry eyebrows free of makeup. Bedtime application is best.
  • Pour a small amount of organic castor oil into a clean, dry tube that can accommodate a cotton swab or mascara wand.
  • Dip a cotton swab or clean mascara wand into the oil, then wipe off excess.
  • Brush a small amount onto eyebrows, being careful not to get any in the eye (if you do, rinse eye with water).
  • Massage oil into eyebrows.
  • Wash off in the morning with a mild cleanser.

Castor oil can also promote healthier, fuller eyelashes if applied correctly and consistently. Again, be sure to carry out the patch test described above before applying it to lashes. Watch this video demonstrating how to apply castor oil to eyelashes or follow our steps below (after a successful patch test is completed):

Start with clean, dry eyelashes free of makeup, preferably at bedtime.

  • Pour a small amount of organic castor oil into a clean, dry tube that can accommodate a mascara wand.
  • Dip a clean mascara wand into the oil and wipe off excess.
  • Brush a very small amount onto eyelashes, being very careful not to get any in the eye (if you do, rinse eye with water).
  • Be sure to coat both the front and back of your lashes.
  • Wash off in the morning with a mild cleanser.

5 Natural Ingredients That Will Instantly Soothe a Dry, Flaky, Irritated Scalp

on January 14, 2019

Itchy. Flakey. Dry. Irritated. Nobody wants these words to describe their scalp, yet it’s an incredibly common (and frustrating!) condition. If you’ve been suffering from an itchy scalp for quite some time, you’ve probably tried an array of products in search of relief. However, most dry scalp formulations are lacking the right mix of ingredients to be truly effective — and with so many options on store shelves, they can leave you scratching your head in confusion. So how do you know which ingredients to look for and which products actually produce results? Let’s examine a handful of natural ingredients that are proven to bring much-needed relief to your itchy and flakey scalp:

1. Coconut Oil You may already be using coconut oil in the kitchen (it’s one of the best oils for high-heat cooking), to protect you from the sun (coconut oil has an SPF of 4, which blocks 75% off UV radiation), and to promote dental health (it helps kill bacteria in your mouth) — but have you tried it on your scalp yet? Coconut oil works extremely well as a moisturizer, helping fight skin irritation and eczema through hydration.

A clinical trial, published in the journal Dermatitis, was conducted on 34 patients with dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin. Some of the patients were given mineral oil and others were given coconut oil and told to apply it daily for two weeks. Regular topical treatment with coconut oil showed significant improvement in skin hydration — and a slight improvement over the subjects using mineral oil.

The National Psoriasis Foundation suggests that those suffering from psoriasis (an immune-mediated disease that causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin) may find relief by massaging coconut oil into their itchy scalp.

2. Charcoal Is there anything charcoal can’t do? Its recent surge in popularity stems from its ability to trap and eliminate toxins from your body (especially in your gut), whiten teeth, fight acne, and absorb sweat and odor in your armpits. Guess what? It’s also a hero when it comes to symptoms associated with a dry scalp.

Binchōtan charcoal in particular, traditionally used in Japanese cooking, is a workhorse when it comes to absorbing the impurities that clog pores. Because binchōtan charcoal has numerous small pores, it can absorb deep-rooted impurities and build-up from the hair and scalp. The end result? Substantially reduced irritation, inflammation and scalp flakiness. If you’d like to see the charcoal work its magic, check out this video demonstration.

3. Tea Tree Oil Mother Nature got it right when she created Melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree native to Australia — the oil derived from its leaves contains natural antimicrobial properties, meaning it can fight bacteria, viruses and fungus. Research published in the International Journal of Dermatology shows that tea tree oil also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which can be especially helpful for anyone who has seborrheic dermatitis (a common skin condition that causes scaly patches, red skin and stubborn dandruff mainly in the scalp).

In a study of 126 patients, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, scientists were investigating the efficacy and tolerability of 5% tea tree oil (compared to a placebo) in patients with mild to moderate dandruff. The group using 5% tea tree oil shampoo showed a whopping 41% improvement in their flakey scalp.

4. Peppermint Oil If you’ve ever indulged in a peppermint candy, then you know just how cooling and refreshing that sensation can be. Now, imagine that same feeling on top of your itchy scalp. Nirvana, right?

Peppermint’s trademark cooling sensation also helps soothe irritation. A study of 50 patients with the itchy skin condition, pruritus, found that those who applied peppermint oil topically for two weeks had a significant improvement in the severity of their itch. Furthermore, the scientists involved deemed it an effective, easy to use, safe, and cheap solution. Score!

5. Vegetable-Derived Micro-Exfoliators Isn’t exfoliating one of the most satisfying experiences? It feels so good to slough away those dead skin cells and release the buildup of debris, bacteria and products that have been trapped in your pores for who knows how long. When it comes to your scalp, this build-up paves the way for inflammation, irritation and — yep, you guessed it — a flakey scalp.

Plant-based micro-exfoliators are a great (and eco-friendly) way to give your dry, flakey scalp a chemical-free scrub that will leave you feeling squeaky clean and itch-free.

The Ultimate Scalp Solution

Now, at this point you may be making a long list of items you need to run out and buy: coconut oil, binchōtan charcoal, tea tree oil, peppermint oil and plant-derived micro-exfoliators. But that seems like a lot of products to not only purchase, but to remember to use every day, right? Thankfully there’s a much more convenient option: Briogeo’s Scalp Revival Collection!

This two-product system incorporates all five of these natural ingredients, making your hair care routine so much simpler. Plus, it’s the only product pairing available that contains all these ingredients in their purest form, meaning they are free from harsh sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, DEA and artificial dyes. And, they are vegan and cruelty-free, too.

The Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo

A 2018 Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner — relies on binchōtan charcoal to draw impurities from the scalp and hair follicle. Vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators remove dead skin cells and product build-up. Cooling peppermint oils reduce scalp itchiness, while the tea tree oil reduces scalp irritation and inflammation. Finally, the coconut oil moisturizes the scalp to combat and prevent dryness and flakiness.

After you’re done shampooing, apply the Scalp Revival Charcoal + Peppermint Oil Cooling Jelly Conditioner, which is a dream for those with dry, itchy and/or flakey scalp problems — in fact, in a survey of 725 participants, 94% said this product was effective at cooling their scalp.
