Fashion Week Runway Hairstyles: FW 2014

on February 19, 2014

As the fashion weeks trudge on for the Fall/Winter 2014 Ready-to-wear collections, we have been fixated on the slick and sleek runway hairstyles that are recurring from catwalk to catwalk. As hair fanatics, we are excited to see these runway hairstyles cross over into the everyday. Effortless hair will always be here to stay, but we are ready for the pendulum to swing to structure. Slick and wet looks were typically reserved for men, but it’s time to feminize and shine. Zac Posen

Pin curls and ponytails were everpresent at Zac Posen’s FW 2014 RTW show. The 20’s are back with this runway hairstyle. The tightly coiled do’s created a contrast from the flow and movement of his signature gowns and matched impeccably with the structured shape of his tweed suits.             [caption id="attachment_402" align="alignleft" width="210"]Alexander Wang FW 2014, photo from style.com Alexander Wang FW 2014, photo from style.com[/caption]

Alexander Wang

The comb-over has gone from a midlife crisis indication to downtown cool.  Here, we can see gender ambiguity at it’s finest, and we are kind of loving it! The runway hairstyles of the Alexander Wang show will pack a punch for anyone who thinks a girl can’t be tough too.

Runway to Reality: Celebrity Hair Ideas and Hair Color Inspiration

on October 15, 2013

The hairstyles on the models at this year’s NYFW Spring/Summer 2014 got just as much attention as the fashions they were walking down the runway in. Here’s a rundown of the most interesting Celebrity Hair Ideas and trends straight from the runways in our NYFW Hair Trends 2013 report.

Braids

As seen on Calla Paris’ runway show, models wore loose and edgy braids in a fishtail style accentuated by ribbons braided into the hair. Karen Walker took a different approach, combining waves with skinny braids for added texture, while Rebecca Minkoff used large, loose braids as a head wrap. Here’s how to create a fishtail braid:   Step 1 After brushing divide hair into two even sections. Step 2 Take a small piece of hair from the back of the right section and cross it over to the front combining it with the left section. Step 3 Take a small piece of hair from the back of the left section and cross it over combining it right the right section. Step 4 Continue crossing sections from left to right until you’re finished. Remember to keep sections loose if you’re recreating this runway look. Step 5 Secure hair with an elastic band or ribbon.   nyfw hair trends 2013

The Wet Look

This look has been seen for a few seasons at NYFW and continues to remain strong, as proven by Suno, Theory, Rag and Bone, Herve Leger, Prabal Gurung and Philip Lim. It was showcased on hair worn down, as well as in ponytails worn high and low or with messy waves. To create the wet look at home, brush hair back using plenty of gel or mousse. To dry, use a hair dryer with a diffuser at the lowest setting.   nyfw hair trends 2013

Swept Up Look

Dolce & Gabbana’s swept up look also featured lots of bling in the form of metal and jewel-encrusted hair bands, flowers and other accessories. This off-the-face look is reminiscent of ancient Rome with a distinctly modern feel. Whether with a loose bun, or a loose braid gently pinned at the nape of the neck, this very feminine look screams “Spring!” We like!   nyfw hair trends 2013

The Ponytail

Whether pulled back tight or uber loose, ponytails were everywhere on the runways. Accessories were also big, accentuating the look (like this cool leather pony wrap on the Helmet Lang runway). This easy and effortless look was seen at Cushnie et Ochs, Helmut Lang, Derek Lam, Edun, DKNY, Honor, Creatures of the Wind and more!   How to create the perfect ponytail: Step 1 Brush hair to remove any knots Step 2 Decide whether to part hair down the middle, to the side, or combed completely back. Step 3 Decide whether to make a high, low, or side ponytail. Step 4 Gather hair at the crown of your head (for a high ponytail), above the nape (for a low ponytail), or at the side (side ponytail) and brush together. You may tease hair if you desire volume. Step 5 Wrap an elastic band around the gathered hair and decide if you’re finishing the look with a tight look or more of a loose finish. Step 6 Spray hair with hair spray to smooth any flyaways and to hold the look. Step 7 Be creative. Add some fashionable hair accessories such as headbands, scarves, bows, clips, or wraps.

The Wave

Loose, sexy waves are all the rage for Spring and Summer. This no-muss, no-fuss look easily takes you from day to night, from the office to the beach. It was a favorite of Alexander Wang and BCBG. If you’ve got natural wave, it’s a given. For those with straight hair, wrap hair loosely around a curling iron. Be sure to loosen the curl with your fingers after hair cools and before applying hair spray.   nyfw hair trends 2013

Deep Side Part

Narcisco Rodridguez runway hair accentuated the side part in magnificent ways giving hair a sleek yet volumized look. Here’s how: apply mouse to damp hair and brush it through. Using a large round brush, blow dry. Apply hair spray to the part to help new hair (the “peach fuzz” lay flat).   nyfw hair trends 2013

Pump up the volume

Jenny Packham Big 1970s inspired hair was seen on the Jenny Packham runway. Worn extremely high, textured, frizzy, and full pinned with a side part. Here’s how: Start by adding mouse from the roots to ends of damp hair. Next, blow dry hair to add mega volume. Curl hair into ½” sections leaving 3-6” from the roots uncurled. Make sure to pin each curl with a small setting clip. Let curls set until completely cooled off and then gently brush curls. Finish the look by creating a deep side part and securing it with a pin if you like. What was your fave NYFW hair trends 2013 look?  Want to see more?
