Three Ways for No Fuss Detangling

on August 23, 2014

Briogeo Brand Ambassador Ashley Hall completely relates to the stress that can come with detangling curly hair. After years of trying different tools and strategies she has finally perfected the art of no fuss detangling. Read her blog to find three easy and quick ways for no fuss detangling so you can focus on enjoying your beautiful hair!

no fuss detangling, curly hair, healthy hair

Washday can be a tiring process especially when it’s time to detangle. Detangling curly hair is not an easy task, but it does not have to be a chore. Having the right products and mindset should be enough to get you through a detangling session without ripping your hair out—literally.

Curly hair is very delicate and needs to be handled with care especially when it’s time to detangle. Improper detangling methods can wreak havoc on curls by causing strands to snap mid-shaft (breakage) or be ripped out from the root. Curly girls need products with copious amounts of slip as well as time and patience to detangle successfully. Here are my top three strategies I use for no fuss detangling and the products I use to make the magic happen!

1. Deep Condition First:

For no fuss detangling, I recommend eliminating tangles after using the Don’t Despair, Repair! Mask.  It contains emollients-- ingredients that provide slip-- in the form of fatty alcohols (Stearyl Alcohol & Cetyl Alcohol) and Cetrimonium Chloride, which helps to condition the hair's cuticle. The DDR Mask also contains Hydrolyzed Proteins (Keratin, Collagen & Silk) which help strengthen the hair against breakage. In other words, this mask provides much needed moisture and strength to curls, which makes detangling a cinch!

 IMG_20140817_2020552. Detangle in Sections:

Detangling in sections helps to eliminate confusion and a prolonged detangling session.  By separating your hair into 4 sections or more (depending on the density & length), you are able to successfully detangle a section and keep it out of the way rather than trying to detangle your whole head at once and risking new tangles.  This will also decrease unnecessary pulling and unwanted breakage.  After you're done with the section, twist it or clip it out of the way.  Always remember to take your time when detangling-- work from the bottom up and be gentle!

conditioner, curly hair, no fuss detangling 3. Detangle Hair When Wet:

For curlies who skip the deep conditioning step, detangling with the Curl Charisma Curl Defining Conditioner also works well. After applying the Curl Charisma conditioner, allow the shower stream to evenly distribute the product, separate your hair into sections, and finger detangle starting from the tips up. I would recommend finger detangling first then using a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush after the section is completed.  Since the  Curl Charisma conditioner helps to define, de-frizz, and enhance curls, the detangling tool will help clump curls and give them that extra pop!

Those three steps will go a long way in taking the stress out of washday. Always remember, a positive attitude and a little patience are also great solutions!

Make a Splash Withough Chlorine-Damaged Hair

on August 04, 2014

Pool Hair, Chlorine-Damaged Hair

A refreshing dip in the pool is a summertime staple, but the effects on your strands can result in devastation. Chlorine is designed to disinfect the water, so you can’t go without it, but too much in your hair will lead to increased porosity and over-drying. Chlorine-Damaged hair is preventable, but if you are already experiencing chlorine-damaged hair, your mane can be saved! tips to protect hair from sun, healthy hair tips, hair care, Chlorine-Damaged HairBefore you Swim: Soak your hair with water and a little conditioner before you hit the pool.  Hair is absorbent, so fill it up with chemical-free H2O and nutrients. It will absorb less of the chlorine and prevent damages. After you Swim: Shampoo your locks immediately. Washing out the chemicals right away will automatically cut your chances of chlorine-damaged hair. Another must is to deep condition (repeat: DEEP CONDITION) regularly. We can’t stress this enough! There will be so many nutrients that need to be replaced in chlorine-damaged hair, and the best way to achieve this is to deep condition. Be sure to also use a good sealant to lock in hair healing ingredients such as coconut or rose hip oil after your wash.

How to Refresh Dry Curly Hair

on July 03, 2014

shutterstock_146387768 (2)  Curly, coily hair is fun and versatile, but every now and again, those kinks lose their spring due to dryness. Dryness happens when the cortex of the strand isn’t holding any moisture (basically because the cuticle barrier is stripped). Dry curly hair is the pits, but a simple change in your regimen can bring back that pep._DSC9077-Edit Dry curly hair is extremely prone to breakage. Use your Don’t Despair Repair mask at least once every other week to give your hair a deep spa treatment. Cover with a shower cap or sit under a steamer to allow the mask to penetrate the cortex. Your arid strands will drink up the moisture from the DDR. curl charismaIn between mask treatments, use your Curl Charisma to lock the vitamins and moisture into your dry curly hair. One good rule of thumb when dealing with a lack-luster mane is to cut down on shampooing. Instead, give that dry curly hair a good rinse under warm water, and use your Curl Charisma as a no-poo. Too much shampoo can strip the cuticle leaving the cortex vulnerable. Always, always, always seal your cuticle with your favorite oil or shea butter to lock in the moisture. Dry curly hair be gone!

What’s the Deal with Protecting Your Ends?

on May 29, 2014

How long has it been since you’ve seen an increase in the length of your hair? Retaining length has everything to do with how well you are treating and protecting your ends. To put it in perspective, the ends are the most elderly part of your hair, so you have to give them the most respect. Protecting your ends by giving them a little TLC will take you to great lengths!   Deep Condition Its practically summer. The birds are chirping, the trees are blooming, and the sun is beaming! That’s great until you consider the damage the sun’s rays could be inflicting. UV Rays are damaging to the cortex of your hair and make it susceptible to breakage. To combat this, you need your DDR. Deep conditioning for at least five minutes every couple of weeks (depending on your hair), and paying close attention to your ends, will start the repairing process for your cortex and give your ends strength. Deep conditioning is vital to protecting your ends internally. Bye, bye breakage! damaged hair treatment Detangle If you have a head full of springy curls, detangling while protecting your ends can be tricky. The easiest way to detangle properly is to do so while the hair is wet and teeming with conditioner. Start at the ends and move up the shaft of the hair. Protecting your ends by being very cautious will keep them from snapping off with each stroke of the comb/brush. Remember, slow and steady wins the race! Sayonara tangles! Get beautiful silky hair and fight frizzy hair with all of Briogeo's hair care products. Protect Protecting your ends physically will be the final step in retaining your length, but what does this mean? This means that you are protecting your ends by hiding them. How do you do this? Find hairstyles that allow your hair to be up like buns, braids, and cute coifs. Protective hairstyles will keep your ends out of harms way, and will allow them to flourish. Protecting your ends with hairstyles is both simple and super cute! Patience Now that you’ve added deep conditioning, gentle detangling, and protective styling to your hair regimen, you will begin to see a change over time for the better. Protecting your ends requires constant maintenance but remember that the love you put into your hair will be the result you get out!

DDR: The Mask for Dry Hair

on April 28, 2014

Each of us has had a period of dry hair, where brittle, arid strands persist for days, weeks, or months on end. Dry hair is the culprit behind fragile, lifeless hair that breaks easily and inhibits growth. We have a solution to your woes (hint: it involves a mask for dry hair), but before we get to this mask for dry hair, lets take a closer look at the cause. badhairday-01 Dry hair happens when the strand isn’t receiving enough oil from your scalp. Usually, this occurrence is due to a poor diet, excessive use of chemical hair treatments (i.e. colors or perms), stress, or the weather. On the reverse of this, healthy, shiny hair happens when the microscopic scales of the hair’s cuticle lie down to protect the inner layer of hair, known as the cortex. When these scales are not lying properly, your cortex is exposed and susceptible to damage. damaged hair treatment The good news is this damage is totally reversible.  A few habit changes will help your hair retain its moisture. First, drink more water. Simple. Next, you’re going to need to add a mask for dry hair to your regimen. Cue the Don’t Despair Repair! Don’t Despair Repair is the perfect mask for dry hair because it is loaded with those much-needed oils and vitamins that your hair uses to thrive. Using a mask for dry hair is going to put those essential oils back into the cortex. Last, you’re going to need an oil to seal the moisture into the cuticle after you’ve rinsed out the DDR. The oil you choose will really depend on what your hair likes. shutterstock_157536899 A mask for dry hair can be used as often as you feel you need it and can be left on for anywhere for 5 minutes to 30 minutes. You know your hair better than anyone, so the small details will depend on you. Don’t Despair Repair is the ultimate mask for dry hair. It’s spring! Stop masking your hair and add back the bounce by adding a mask for dry hair!

Find out why bad hair days occur with these bad hair day solutions

on November 19, 2013

Prevent bad hair days forever with these simple tips!  If hair is our crowning glory, then there’s simply no time for bad hair days. Yet everyone experiences them from time to time. These bad hair day solutions can help you turn that frown upside down.

Why do I have bad hair days?

Prevent bad hair days with regular hair cuts and Briogeo hair products. 1.    Hair needs cutting:  The need for a haircut leads to split ends and damage. It also causes hair to not style as easily, and to have little texture or shape. Aim for getting a trim every 6-8 weeks. 2.    Weather:  Humid weather conditions like rain and snow can cause hair to instantly become frizzy, puffy, and unruly. Use an umbrella, wear a hat, or keep a scarf handy at all times in case of a hair emergency. Use Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair to prevent bad hair days. 3.    Sweat:  Sweat from strenuous activity or heat causes hair to lose its style and feel dirty. Keeping hair pinned or tied back can help a lot to keep sweat away from your face. You can also try wearing a sweatband when working out to protect your strands. 4.    Dirt and oil:  Dirty or oily hair can create a bad hair day for anyone. It can make hair look and feel stiff and rigid, and that makes it hard to style.  We recommend shampooing with a sulfate-free cleanser, like Be Gentle, Be Kind, according to your shampooing regimen. 5.    Using the wrong products:  Using the wrong hair care products—like those not made for your specific hair type—can make your hairstyle less than perfect. The wrong ingredients can weigh hair down and make it look unclean.

Tips to prevent bad hair days

There are plenty of ways to prevent bad hair days. Follow these simple tips and ideas to love your hair all the time!
